Search queries on Google:

How many search queries does the Google search engine process per day?

Current estimates for 2026 put daily search queries worldwide at 8.5 to 16.4 billion – the range exists because Google has not published official figures since 2016. The conservative, most frequently cited benchmark is 8.5 billion queries/day (around 99,000 per second); newer projections (including Exploding Topics) already put the figure at 13.6 billion. Extrapolated to a full year, that's 3.1 to 5 trillion search queries. For comparison: in 1998, at Google's founding, it was 10,000 searches per day. It still holds true that around 15% of daily queries have never been asked in that exact form before (Source: exploding-topics, thunderbit.com, affinco.com).

What do search queries look like?

About 8% of all search queries are phrased as questions. ( Moz )

It's important to make sure that sentences aren't formulated in an overly complicated way.

Remarkably, despite over 8.5 billion daily search queries, nearly 15% had never been carried out before! ( Google )

What were the five most searched terms in 2020?

In general, the most important search terms in Germany in 2020 were: coronavirus, US election, weather tomorrow, Wirecard, and Biontech stock. Worldwide, the most important search terms in 2020 were: coronavirus, election results, Kobe Bryant, zoo, and IPL. Most of these terms relate to current events, such as the US election and the 2020 pandemic (Source: google.com).

How long does an average search take?

An average search takes 55 seconds to 1 minute. 21% of searchers modify the search query again before clicking. 8% of clicks lead back to the search results list. However, 66% of search queries lead to multiple clicks, while 34% result in no clicks at all. (Source: Moz.com)

Studies show that nearly 61% of all search queries come from mobile devices. Five years ago, mobile search queries were not yet as high, at 44% (Source: satista.com). Every year, growth in mobile search queries has risen by 3–5%.

Voice search: How many search queries are made via voice?

Google says that more than 50% of all queries in 2020 came about via voice search. Of mobile searches, 20% are already voice-based (Source: quoracreative.com). With the boom that Google Home, Amazon Echo (Alexa), and Apple's HomePod are currently experiencing, the number of voice search queries is rapidly increasing. The average voice search result loads 52% faster than an average page.

Optimizing for voice search makes sense. Optimizing content for voice search differs slightly from content optimization for regular desktop search. In addition, a page has a better chance of being selected for a search query. If you rank among the top 3 search results for certain queries, it's very likely that your page will also be selected for voice queries.

How often are search results clicked on?

In mobile search, only 43% lead to clicks. 57% of search results already provide the answer the user is hoping for. In desktop search, that figure is still 35%. Around 86% stay only on the first search results page, and two-thirds of those look only at the first 5 search results.

The click-through rate for the first position in search results averages 19.30% at Google, and 10.57% for the second position (Source: internetmarketingninjas.com). Of desktop users, 31.52% click

Despite everything, only around 5.7% of websites make it into the top 10 search results within a year of publication. ( Ahrefs )

In contrast, the average page in the top 10  is 2+ years old. ( Ahrefs )

What makes up the top search results?

Result No. 1 in Google's organic search results has an average CTR of 27.6%. This figure is well above average, considering that a CTR of 2% is regarded as good.( Backlinko )

What is the relationship between search and traffic?

Mobile devices carry out more searches than desktop devices, but also generate less traffic. This is partly because the results mentioned above already appear in the search results, or because answers come from Google's cache (e.g. AMP content). 8% of all search queries are questions that can be answered without a click to a website. Through FAQ snippets and rich snippets, users can get a targeted answer without having to click through multiple websites. It should be noted that nearly 92.96% of worldwide traffic comes from Google Search, Google Images, and Google Maps. ( SparkToro )

Google Ads: For how many search queries are ads displayed?

Google Ads are displayed for around 50% of search queries (Google Shopping, by contrast, only 9%). Within the search results, 3% click on the ads. These 3% of clicks alone generate $75 billion in revenue for Google. If it were 6%, Google would double its annual revenue to $150 billion. Google vs. AI chatbots: How many queries does ChatGPT process by comparison?

Despite the growth of AI chatbots, classic Google Search remains many times larger, with 8.5 to 16 billion queries per day, than any single AI assistant. ChatGPT (OpenAI), with an estimated 2.5 billion prompts per day and over 1 billion weekly active users (as of summer 2026), is by far the largest AI competitor – yet even by an optimistic calculation it reaches barely a third of Google's daily search volume. Gemini (Google) does not publish exact daily figures, but benefits from its integration into Android and Workspace and is likely in the high hundreds of millions. Perplexity AI, with an estimated 35–45 million users, processes around 1.2–1.5 billion search queries per month. Claude (Anthropic) likewise does not publish daily figures; overall volume is in the tens of millions, though with above-average long, complex prompts due to a user base of developers and professionals. Google and title tags:

Are title tags really important?

Even though 7.4% of top-ranking pages have no title tag, it remains an important on-page factor that can significantly influence Google rankings. ( Ahrefs )

Does Google rewrite title tags?

It's not uncommon (in 33.4% of cases) for Google to rewrite title tags. ( Ahrefs )

It's frustrating when a lot of effort goes into meta descriptions and  Google only displays them in 37.22% of cases.( Ahrefs )

It's also worth knowing that Google is more likely to write its own meta description for long-tail keywords than for short keywords. ( Ahrefs )
